Overpass landscaping OK'd
Posted Tuesday, February 06, 2007 12:55:49 PM by Blog57 Team
It was good news that the low bid for supplemental landscaping on the Ohio Street overpass project came in more than $100,000 lower than what the city of Salina had estimated. The question was whether it was too good to be true. RFB Construction, Pittsburg, submitted the low bid of $257,178, which was more than $50,000 lower than the next-lowest bidder and about $107,000 less than the city's estimate. The gap between RFB and the other three bidders caused city engineer Karlton Place to do some homework to make sure the company could live up to its promise, Place told the Salina City Commission at Monday's meeting. "They haven't done any work for the city of Salina, that I know of, but they have done quite a few (Kansas Department of Transportation) projects," Place told the commission....

Residents dont want to lose land for a buffer

A plan to beef up a buffer behind the old Cinnaminson Mall with a new wall and landscaping may soon be a dead issue. It's simple. Unless we hear otherwise from the residents of Beech Tree Drive, it's likely the buffer will remain the way it is now, Committeeman Anthony Minniti said. He said the township has tried to facilitate a deal that would require the mall's redeveloper, New Plan Excel Realty Trust of New York, to construct a solid fence and add landscaping to improve the aesthetics in the area and reduce some of the light and noise pollution expected once the mall is redeveloped. The catch is the redeveloper would have to recapture between 91/2 and 32 feet of land behind 18 properties that has been used by those Beech Tree homeowners for nearly 30 years....

PICKUP WARS: Toyota faces uphill battle

Mike Toncevich, 55-year-old owner of Imagination in Landscaping in Ann Arbor, puts his trucks to the test on a regular basis, towing backhoes, small tractors and big trailers of sod. In the past 30 years, he's owned more than 20 trucks: four Chevys, the rest Fords. These days, he drives a Ford F-250 and a F-350. More than anything, a good truck is a workhorse, dependable over the long haul, he said. "It should definitely take a lickin' and keep on tickin'," Toncevich said. As Toyota Motor Corp. starts production this month of a bigger, more powerful Tundra full-size pickup, the Japanese automaker will try to impress hard-core truck drivers, such as Toncevich. In the marketing world, these customers are called "true truckers." They scrutinize a truck's every detail: transmission, engine, towing, payload, frame, suspension and resale value....

Levinson Upper School student newspaper, won a gold medal for the second year in a row from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association in its annual critique. The school also won the Award of Excellence for a public institution from Montgomery County in its 20th annual Beautification Awards Competition Contest. Hamodiya, the student newspaper, was scored in four categories: coverage, writing and editing, graphic presentation and business operations. For three of these, Hamodiya earned points qualifying it for All-Columbian Honors. In its critique, CSPA stated, ‘‘Your range of coverage is excellent; you are not afraid to tackle the tough topics and issues facing your student body and you do an outstanding job in relating national and international events to your school community and how the events will affect your students." Union, Metro hope to resolve contract dispute at this week

Zookeepers and park rangers have haggled over their contract with Portland's regional government for months, but both sides hope to reach an agreement at a bargaining session Thursday. A clash over Metro's freedom to use contractors and volunteers extended negotiations beyond June 30, when the contract with Laborers' Local 483 expired. Elected officials at Metro plan for growth in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties. The agency also manages visitor attractions, including regional parks and the Oregon Zoo. Local 483, a government employee union, represents part of Metro's work force -- about 85 full-time employees and 190 temporary employees, union field agent Rob Wheaton said. Most members do maintenance, landscaping or animal care at the zoo; a handful are park rangers....

Hearing set for dispute over property landscaping

The Marin County Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing Nov. 13 to consider the Sierra Club's challenge to a Kentfield couple's plans for house and landscaping changes to their property. Rick and Karen Moran of 21 N. Ridgewood Road have proposed to add a six-foot wire mesh fence across their rear and west property lines, with two creek crossings, as part of a series of home improvements. Both the county Community Development Agency and the Planning Commission have previously approved aspects of the proposal. However, the Sierra Club alleges that the fence, which would pass through the county's Stream Conservation Area, would not be consistent with the countywide plan's policies, would exacerbate flooding and would inhibit the movement of wildlife. The commission has yet to schedule the time of the hearing....
